Dolly Parton is one of country music's most popular entertainers and recognized song writer.
She was one of 12 children born to a farming couple who at one time lived on a one room cabin.
Parton learned to play a guitar at eight years old and by 11 was performing her own songs on radio.
She became popular in high school with her performances for the student body and an appearance on the Grand Ole Opry at age 13.
It was around this time, Dolly Parton felt she might pursue a career in music and decided to move to Nashville.
In 1966, she married Carl Dean who was in the asphalt-paving business.
Parton's early success in country music was in writing songs for such singers as Hank Williams, Jr. and Skeeter Davis.
She was also invited by Porter Wagoner to appear on his shows.
Parton signed a recording contract with RCA Records in 1968.
Over the next few years, the couple became a popular singing duet and Parton was establishing her career as a solo performer.
In 1974, Dolly Parton decided to break with Wagoner to pursue a career as a solo artist and song writer.
Over the next ten years, the short 5' 2" Parton had tremendous success as a country singer.
She broadened her exposure to include a television series and began acting in movies.
Parton's songs began to break into the pop music market and her fan base grew.
Several of her songs were reaching #1 including a duet of the Bee Gees'
Islands in the Stream
sung with Kenny Rogers.
In 1986, Dolly Parton became a co-owner of
Silver Dollar City Tennessee
, a theme park that was soon renamed
Dollywood
.
The park includes concerts by Parton and other musical acts for the 2.5 million yearly visitors.
She has won many honors including 7 Emmy Awards, an award for
Entertainer of the Year
, and was inducted in the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1999.
Parton has impressed the nation by her considerable charity work, philanthropic acts, and job creation efforts.
Perhaps Dolly Parton's highest award was the National Medal of Arts awarded to her in 2006.
