Denzel Washington has proven to be effective in helping the roles for African-American actors to be expanded.
His father was a Pentecostal minister and his mother worked in a hair salon but divorced when Washington was 24 years old.
Washington's parents, in their own way, served as a positive influence for the future actor.
The parents sent Washington and his sister to boarding school during the time of the divorce.
After high school graduation, Denzel Washington enrolled at Fordham University, New York, to study Medicine but later changed to Journalism.
He graduated in 1977 and then moved to San Francisco where he studied acting at the American Conservatory Theater.
Soon he was accepting acting roles in various television productions and found recognition in his role in the series "St. Elsewhere."
In 1983 while on his first film, Wilma, Washington met and married another actor, Pauletta Pearson.
By 1987, Denzel Washington had been nominated for an Oscar as Best Supporting Actor for the film "Cry Freedom."
Two years later he won his first Oscar, again for Best Supporting Actor, in "Glory."
Washington was gaining a reputation for presenting a powerful performance in a variety of acting roles.
He is known as helping and providing advice to young black actors and has experience as a director.
Washington won an Academy Award for Best Actor in the 2001 movie "Training Day."
Denzel Washington has become a spokesperson for the Boys and Girls Club of America and serves as a model for youth of all colors.
