His father, by the same name, was a military person and young Norman was inspired to become a general like his father.
When his father was stationed in Iran, the youth went to various European schools and he became fluent in German and French.
The family returned to United States and Schwarzkopf enrolled in West Point, his father's old school.
In 1956, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and a rank of Second Lieutenant.
He served two tours during the Vietnam War and was wounded twice.
Between his tours of duty, he found out that many Americans did not support the war and he considered resigning from the military.
For his efforts in this war, one of the awards he received was a Distinguished Service Medal.
Schwarzkopf in 1983 was made Deputy Commander of the Joint Task Force in the Grenada student rescue.
In 1990, Iraq invaded Kuwait without provocation and Schwarzkopf was put in command of all forces arriving for the Gulf War.
Through his quick military victories in this engagement, he gained the nickname "Stormin' Norman."
In 1991, Schwarzkopf retired from the military having achieved the rank of 4-star General over his career.
He continues to be active in various community and charitable organizations and his Schwarzkopf Cup event has raised millions of dollars for the The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis.
