Archie Moore, born Archibald Lee Wright, is credited with 141 boxing knockouts.
His professional career spanned nearly thirty years and he fought in three major weight divisions.
Moore never really stated what his date of birth was but he was fifty or older when he retired from the ring.
Before Archie Moore became known in boxing circles, he fought many fights in many places of the world.
He picked up the nick-name "Ol' Mongoose" and was admired by all who met him as a gentleman.
His hometown was Benoit, Mississippi and where he started out as a middleweight in 1940.
By 1945, he had become a winning light heavyweight and leading contenders avoided matches with him.
Finally, at the age of 39 he was given a shot at the champion, Joey Maxim, and defeated him by decision.
For the next decade, Archie Moore took on all comers but never lost a title match in his division.
He tried several fights with noted heavyweights but was nearly always defeated in this heavier class.
Moore had a fondness for children and started the ABC (Any Boy Can) Foundation to reach youths who needed help.
He used his personality after he retired from boxing by becoming a respected movie actor.
One noted role he had was that of "Jim" in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
He also used his fame to help promote many African American causes.
Moore scored more knockouts than anyone in boxing history and his career spanned four decades.
Archie Moore was one of the original inductees in the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
