Dwight Eisenhower was born to David Jacob Eisenhower and Ida Elizabeth Stover, the third of seven sons.
After his high school graduation, he worked for a couple of years and then, in 1911, enrolled at United States Military Academy, West Point, New York.
During his first tour of duty, Dwight Eisenhower married Mamie Geneva Doud, in 1916; the couple were to have two children.
Eisenhower served in the United States during the First World War, helping train troops that others would lead in actual battle.
By 1920, after serving in the infantry and tank corps, he had achieved the rank of Major.
In the 20's and 30's Eisenhower served with Colonel George Patton, General John Pershing and General Douglas MacArthur.
He served as MacArthur's assistant for three years in the Philippines.
Dwight Eisenhower was gaining a reputation as a solid military figure and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel.
During the years leading up to its entrance into World War II, the US knew it would need qualified leaders for the organization of its troops.
Because of his background in this respect, in 1941 Eisenhower was given the rank of Brigadier-General.
With the attack on Pearl Harbor by Japan, General George Marshall made Eisenhower the senior war planner for the American Army.
By 1942, Eisenhower was designated the Commanding General for the European Theater.
Over the course of the war, he was given the role of Supreme Commander and planned the important invasion of France.
Following the war, Eisenhower retired in 1948 to become the President of Columbia University.
Three years later, he became the leader for the North American Treaty Organization (NATO).
Eisenhower entered politics in 1958 for the Republicans and was elected President of the United States.
One of his major contributions of his administration was ending the Korean War.
Dwight Eisenhower was a remarkable leader and negotiator making critical decisions at historic moments.
His country honored him with a state funeral after he died from a lengthy illness in 1969.
